Sarah Drew Slate and Lapis-lazuli necklace is both dramatic and restrained. A lovely combination of colours in dark blue and grey slate, it also manages to look distinctive and luxurious. Lapis-lazuli is a semi-precious stone, made from metamorphic rock. Always highly valued, it has considerable historical pedigree. For example Egyptian Pharoah Tutenkhamun’s funeral mask in 1341-1323BCE is carved from lapis.

The slate is Cornish, which likewise has been quarried there for centuries. As with all Sarah’s work the links of the neck-chain are eco-silver.

About the artist

Sarah Drew is one of our GroundJewels artists. She lives and works in Cornwall. Inspired by the environment and resources of the coastline, she makes contemporary eclectic jewellery from found objects such as driftwood, sea plastic, sea glass, slate pebbles, recycled glass and ethically sourced semi-precious stones. These she combines with chunky hammered eco silver chains, delicate crocheted fine silver and fused silver focal pieces. Inventive reuse is characteristic of her striking and sustainable practice.

“I am and always have been a bit of a collector: not of high value, status-ridden things that you have to be careful with, Just little curious, quirky things that are everywhere in everybody’s everyday life. I just like to pick them up, look at them and put them in my pocket. Later I like to make them into jewellery”.
